Introduction
p>Research for this paper derives largely from author's fieldwork conducted in 2000-2002 in twelve oilfields and refineries across seven Chinese provinces, combined with specialized publications of the Chinese petroleum industry and internal publications (neican) of the central government and national oil corporations.[1] In addition, Chinese interpretations of contemporary political economy events are sought out whenever possible to provide a reference point to assess existing Western studies.[2]
