Abstract
Indigenous peoples in diverse communities have claimed the right to control and benefit from the natural resources within their domain. This paper founds that international law and practice recognises the right of indigenous peoples over their natural resources, as well as their right to self determination and sustainable development. However, some sovereign States, with particular reference to Nigeria, have asserted over-riding control upon the resources, to the exclusion of the Niger-Delta indigenous peoples.
