Stéphane Brabant has been a partner at Herbert Smith since 1998 and is based in the Paris office. Stéphane is in charge of the Africa Group as well as one of the leading partners in the Project / Project Finance Group; he is also Honorary Professor at the Centre for Energy Petroleum & Mineral Law and Policy of the University of Dundee (Scotland) and gives lectures at the French School of Mines (Ecole des Mines de Paris). Stéphane is a graduate of the University of Lille, France and the University of Canberra, Australia.
He lived and worked in Africa for some seven years and has been involved, over the past 15 years, in a wide range of international projects and project financing in French/Spanish/Portuguese civil law countries of Africa (North as well as West and Central Africa countries). He also advises companies, banks and States on the legal and tax aspects of a wide range of projects in Africa, particularly in the oil, gas, mining, electricity and infrastructure sectors. His experience in this field has been varied, ranging from drafting and negotiating project agreements (production sharing contracts, joint operating agreements, mining agreements, BOT contracts, etc.) to advising on pre-contentious and contentious matters.
