Dr. Hermes de Araujo is a Full Professor at Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and at present is Director General of Centro de Pesquisas de Energia Eletrica (CEPEL), under leave from UFRJ. Past responsibilities comprise: Coordinator of the Energy Planning Programme at the Graduate School of Engineering (COPPE/UFRJ, 1980-82, 1989-90), Head of the Energy Group at the School of Economics (Instituto de Economia da UFRJ, 1996-98), Research Director at the Instituto de Economia da UFRJ (IE/UFRJ), 1998-2001, President of UNESCO CINTREP Network (1984-86), and Coordinator of the UFRJ Nucleus of Economics of Infrastructure (NEI/UFRJ, 1996-2003).
Research interests include energy policy modelling, innovation diffusion, and more recently economic regulation of energy industries. Has written extensively on these subjects and has done studies for government agencies and energy companies in Brazil (including the National Electricity Agency, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Eletrobras and Petrobras among others) and abroad (including Ecuador, Thailand and Algeria). Has been responsible for a regular graduate course on the Regulation of Infrastructure Industries at IE/UFRJ, until taking on present duties.
