Profile
Ray is a dispute resolution lawyer who also advises a broad range of clients on Indigenous legal issues, as well as on environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks, regulation and compliance issues. His disputes practice includes commercial litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution focusing on the energy industry, major infrastructure, and the transportation sector. Ray is experienced in advising clients on best practices for engaging with Indigenous communities and stakeholders in good faith, on issues related to fulfilling the duty to consult, and regarding Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). His clients include financial institutions, energy and mining companies, and governments.
Ray co-lead an international team advising the Equator Principles Association on the most recent update to the Equator Principles (EP IV) published in 2020. Ray has represented clients before federal and provincial regulators and environmental review panels, and has appeared at all levels of Court in Alberta, the Federal Court, and Federal Court of Appeal.
