Introduction
The US federal government has supported increased hydrogen usage for over forty years, but it wasn't until 1990 that it created a research plan for hydrogen outside of the Space program. The United States first formulated a hydrogen policy in the Energy Policy Act of 1992, which promulgated large-scale hydrogen research. It aimed to reduce U.S. dependence on petroleum and concomitantly encourage the use of alternative fuels via the Department of Energy; hydrogen was one such source.
