Introduction
The leaders of the European Union Countries signed the Treaty of Lisbon on 13 December, 2007. The Lisbon Treaty entered into force on 1 December 2009, after being ratified by all the EU Member States. The two parts of the revised Treaties arising from the Lisbon Treaty reforms - namely the Treaty on European Union ("TEU") and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union ("TFEU") (referred to together as the "Lisbon Treaty" or as the "Treaties" in this article) - are of equal importance.
