Background
The brief interruption of gas deliveries by Gazprom to Ukraine at the beginning of January 2006 was preceded by a Gazprom demand that Ukraine pay US$230/thousand cubic meters (mcm) for its gas, substantially above previously reported prices for gas delivered to FSU countries ($50 - $80/mcm). Gazprom claimed, and news media reported, that the new price was related to a "world" or "European" price for natural gas.
